The O. Henry Prizes

According to the website of Random House, the publisher that administers the prizes: Throughout the year, magazine editors submit their issues to The O. Henry Prize Stories series editor, Laura Furman. The stories must be published in an American or Canadian periodical and originally written in English. Novel excerpts and works in translation are not considered. Online publications are not eligible for submission to the O. Henry Prize Stories. From the multitude of stories submitted, the editor chooses twenty winners that stand out above the rest. Each juror then reads the twenty winning stories in manuscript form, without knowledge of author names or publications. Without consulting one another, they each select their favorite and write a short essay about what led them to their choice.

FAQs about the selection process:

  • The series editor alone chooses 20 prize stories and up to fifteen recommended stories from among the thousands published in the 260 or so magazines submitted. There is no official "nomination" process. All 20 selections are considered "winners."

  • The O. Henry Prize Stories are selected from the submitted magazines. Stories must be originally written in English and published in Canada and the United States during the previous calendar year. There are no restrictions on genre. Novel excerpts and works in translation are not considered.

  • Stories published in American and Canadian magazines are eligible for consideration for inclusion in The O. Henry Prize Stories. Stories must be written originally in the English language. No translations are considered. Sections of novels are not considered. Stories may not be submitted by agents or writers.
  • Most magazines simply put the O. Henry Prize Stories on their comp list. It's important that the editors check that the list carries over from year to year to be sure the O. Henry series editor is receiving the magazine. Stories must reach the series editor by June 1.

  • Each year, three distinguished fiction writers are asked annually to be jurors for the O. Henry Prize Stories. Jurors evaluate the entire collection and write an appreciation of the story they most admire.

Youth Group Activities

Typical evangelical youth groups for teens focus on how the lessons of the Bible can apply to daily life. They usually take place weekly on weekday evenings in some form of a recreation room in the church. Through Bible readings, real-world examples, music, group discussion, and interactive activities, they tackle issues such as ambition, freedom, trauma, finances, and, well, the apocalypse.

MFA Directing Programs / "Pratt College"

The following are Directing MFA programs that are respectable if not considered top tier, which generally includes Brown, Carnegie Mellon, Columbia, Iowa, Juilliard, UC San Diego, UT Austin, and Yale. Wilner's use of "college" is something of a misnomer, as schools that offer graduate degrees are traditionally "universities," regardless of size.
